چکیده مقاله:
Background and Objective: Chronic and non-healing wounds have a significant impact on quality of life and have high sanitary costs. Wounds are complex and may require complicated management, such as the use of wound dressings, antibiotic treatment, and revascularization. There is a possibility of infection in traumatic wounds. In the context of service aboard a naval ship or submarine, care delivery can be challenged by the unavailability of sterile equipment and dressings, contaminated environment. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized environment. This method of therapy has shown significant therapeutic properties. In this review, the effects of this therapeutic method on the wound healing process are studied.

Search Method: In order to find relevant data, PubMed, SID, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases were searched between 2010 and 2022. The search included "wound" and "hyperbaric" keywords with the subheadings of "oxygen therapy," "wound infection," "wound management." Then, the collected data and results were categorized.

Findings: Wounds are normally associated with an inadequate oxygen supply due to damage to the vessels in the area, which results in slower healing of the damaged tissues. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) increases tissue oxygenation which helps the healing process of wounds. Increasing the oxygen pressure helps to provide adequate energy for the wound healing process by means of aerobic respiration. Furthermore, a high concentration of oxygen reduces the occurrence of infections and increases reactive oxygen species, antioxidants and growth factors, which facilitate the healing process.

Conclusion: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an effective treatment for both patients with chronic wounds and traumatic wounds, this method leads to better and faster wound care.
