Compare the effect of training basic and advanced CPR in workshop and multimedia format on the knowledge and performance of nurses

Nurses are the first people who attend to the patient once the patient has heart attack. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of training basic and advanced CPR in workshop and multimedia format on the knowledge and performance of nurses.
Materials and methods: This clinical trial was conducted with 243 nurses from hospitals that were randomly selected. First, a multimedia software program was designed after the basic and advanced CPR training curriculum was determined. Simultaneously, a researcher-made questionnaire was used to assess nurses’ knowledge. Then of nurses who got less than 60%, 116 were randomly selected and divided into three 38-people groups of workshop and multimedia software, and a control group. Nurses’ performance was assessing in all three groups using objective structured clinical exam (OSCE) in 6 stations and under the same circumstances. In the next stage, the workshop group enjoyed 6-hour training for basic and advanced CPR in a workshop, and the multimedia software group learned the same using the software. Four weeks after the training ended, knowledge and performance of nurses in the three groups were assessed again using the same tool. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics in the SPSS-18 software.
Results: The results showed that the majority of subjects (76.5%) were women, 82.4% were married and 60.49% were officially employed. Furthermore, their knowledge about basic and advanced CPR was weak in 59.5% and 76.3% of the subjects, respectively, and their practice was also weak in 75% and 93% of the subjects, respectively.
Comparing the results before and after intervention showed that knowledge was statistically different in the three groups (P<0.005). ANOVA showed a significant difference among the 3 groups after the intervention, and comparison of the mean difference among the 3 groups showed a significant difference (P<0.05). Furthermore, paired t-test showed a significant difference between the practice level of the intervention groups before and after the intervention (P<0.001). ANOVA showed a significant difference among the 3 groups after the intervention, and also comparison of the mean differences among the groups showed a significant difference (P<0.001).Tukey test showed the largest difference was observed in the multimedia group in term of both knowledge and practice.
Conclusion:
The results of the present study showed that training basic and advanced CPR effects knowledge and performance of nurses using both methods of workshop and multimedia software. Considering retraining courses of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and spend more time and money in training workshop method, therefore it is recommended that it replaces the conventional methods of training including workshop training.
